CHINA MARKET POSITIONING TEMPLATE

Choose the local buyer, alternative, promise, and proof.

Positioning for China is a market choice, not a translation exercise. Start with evidence about a specific buyer and the alternatives already in their decision set, then make one defensible promise that content, sales, and campaigns can repeat.

01 / EVIDENCE

Separate fact from assumption

Inventory verified buyer, category, channel, competitor, and product evidence with dates and sources.

Which parts of the brief are known, inferred, or still unknown?
02 / BUYER

Choose one priority buyer

Name the role, context, desired progress, purchase friction, and decision stage that the position must serve.

Whose decision becomes easier if this position works?
03 / ALTERNATIVE

Define the real alternative

Include direct competitors, platform-native workarounds, internal processes, and the choice to do nothing.

What would the buyer use or keep doing instead?
04 / CATEGORY

Pick the frame

Choose a category or reference point that gives the buyer enough context without trapping the offer in the wrong comparison.

What mental shelf should this offer occupy?
05 / PROMISE

Write one value promise

Connect a differentiated capability to a buyer outcome in language that can survive translation into execution.

What can we credibly promise that the alternative cannot?
06 / PROOF

Attach proof and a test

Map every claim to evidence, name the owner, and define the interviews, messages, or sales signals that could disprove it.

What evidence would make us revise this position?

SYNTHETIC POSITIONING TRACE

One market choice, expressed through four controlled decisions.

The example shows the decision structure only. It does not claim a current China category truth or replace buyer research.

BUYERNarrow the decision owner

Choose the operator who owns the problem and approval path, not a broad industry audience.

ALTERNATIVEInclude the status quo

Compare against spreadsheets, agencies, platform tools, or inaction when those are the real buying alternatives.

PROMISETie capability to progress

Translate a feature into one credible change in the buyer's work without adding an unverified outcome.

TESTMake revision possible

Name the evidence that would strengthen, narrow, or reject the current position.

MINIMUM INPUT
  • Global positioning
  • China customer evidence
  • Local competitor map
  • Product constraints
OUTPUT
  • Positioning statement
  • Strategic routes
  • Messaging hierarchy
  • Validation plan
BOUNDARY / NOT FOR THIS

Know where the workflow must stop.

  • Weak China customer evidence can only support hypotheses for testing
  • Does not replace naming trademark or regulated-claims review
  • Cannot make a global proof point locally credible by translation alone
FAILURE MODES

These conditions distort the result.

  • Global messaging is translated before the local buying context is defined
  • The proposal lists benefits without choosing an audience or alternative
  • A recommended route has no China-specific proof or validation plan
